How to fix image too large errors on Etsy (the 1 MB problem)
If an Etsy upload keeps failing, the file is often simply too large. Etsy recommends at least 2000 pixels on each side, but uploads are most reliable when the file stays under about 1 MB. A full-resolution phone photo blows past that, which is why the upload stalls or errors out.
Why it happens
A modern phone photo at full resolution can be 12 megapixels or more and several megabytes on disk. Etsy may reject or stall on it, especially on a slow connection or when you are uploading ten photos at once.
The fix
Resize to 2000 by 2000 and compress with a quality search that steps the JPEG quality down until the file is under 1 MB while keeping it sharp. The key word is search: instead of guessing a quality number, the tool tries a value, measures the file, and adjusts until it lands just under the limit at the highest quality that fits. SelfShot does this automatically for every photo in the batch.
The fallback
Some photos are busy enough that 2000 by 2000 cannot reach 1 MB at a quality that still looks good. Rather than ship a soft, over-compressed image, SelfShot falls back to 1600 by 1600, which carries less data and slots under the limit easily. 1600 still meets Etsy's display needs, and the tool tells you when it used the fallback so there are no surprises.
Do the whole shop at once
You rarely have just one photo. Drop your entire set, pick Etsy, and process the batch. Every file comes out square, sharp, and under the limit, named clearly so you can match them to listings. For the full target list across platforms, see the product photo size guide.
Questions
What is Etsy's image size limit?
Etsy recommends images at least 2000 pixels on each side and uploads are most reliable when the file is under about 1 MB.
Will compressing ruin the quality?
Not if it is done with a quality search. SelfShot steps the JPEG quality down only as far as needed to get under the limit, so the image stays sharp.
What if my photo cannot reach 1 MB at 2000 pixels?
It falls back to 1600 by 1600, which still meets Etsy's needs and uploads cleanly. SelfShot tells you when this happens.
